This text was designed for a second level course in Mechanics that I developedstarting in Spring 2009. At that time the engineering mechanics curriculumat Berkeley was reorganized to combine a standalone Sophomore level staticscourse with a Junior level strength of materials (engineering mechanics) course.In the design of the new single course, most of the topics of the original twocourses were retained but the coverage and sophistication of the presentationwas reduced. With only one course in (solid) mechanics, it was felt that afollow-on course was essential for the students. One option was to identifythe material that was no longer being taught in our new single combinedcourse and to assemble it into a follow-on course. However, due to the designof the single course, this did not present a topical outline which was veryappealing. Thus we opted instead to create a course from scratch which wefelt would complement our combined statics and strength course. It wouldbuild upon and extend the material the students has already learned but itwould explicitly not revisit the topics in more technical detail, rather it wouldexpand their understanding of mechanics .
